Tax Season Deadlines, Extensions, and USPS Updates: What Our Clients Need to Know

As we move through the heart of tax season, we want to clearly communicate important deadlines, expectations, and planning considerations so there are no surprises and we can continue delivering accurate, high‑quality work for our clients.

This article outlines:

  • Key document submission deadlines
  • How extensions work and what they do (and do not) cover
  • Final cutoffs for extended returns
  • A new late‑document fee
  • Important USPS changes that affect how and when information should be sent

Our goal is transparency, proactive planning, and making sure your return is handled smoothly and on time.

1. Business (Entity) Return Deadlines

To ensure timely and accurate filing for business returns, we must receive complete information by the deadlines below. Business returns are more complex and often impact owners’ personal returns, so early submission is critical.

March 16th – Entity return Deadlines

  • Applies to S Corporations and Partnerships
  • Any business documents received after February 16th will most likely not be completed by the original March 15 filing deadline
  • Returns submitted after this date should expect to be extended

C Corporations with April filing deadlines follow similar expectations and may also require extensions if documents are received late.

2. 1040 (Individual) Return Deadlines

To complete individual tax returns accurately and on time, we must receive complete and organized information by the dates below.

March 25 – Standard Filing Cutoff

  • Any 1040 documents received after March 25 will most likely not be completed by the April filing deadline.
  • Returns submitted after this date should expect to be extended.

Please note: extensions are common and often the right choice when information is delayed. Filing an extension is not a penalty and does not reflect negatively on you.

If we do not hear from you at all, we WILL file you an extension to make sure you are taken care of.

2. Understanding Extensions

An extension:

  • Extends the time to file, not the time to pay
  • Requires us to estimate your tax liability as accurately as possible
  • Helps avoid rushed or error‑prone filings

If you expect missing documents, late K‑1s, or unresolved questions, an extension is often the most responsible option.

3. Extended Return Completion Deadlines

To ensure extended returns are completed before statutory deadlines, we must receive all remaining documents by the dates below.

 August 15 – Entity Returns

  • S‑Corps, Partnerships, and other entity returns
  • Documents must be received by August 15 to guarantee on‑time completion

 September 15 – Individual (1040) Returns

  • All documents for extended individual returns must be received by September 15 to ensure timely filing

4. Late Document Fee

To account for compressed timelines, re‑work, and staffing constraints during extension season:

  • Any return with documents received after Aug 15 will be subject to a 20% fee increase.

This policy allows us to:

  • Maintain quality standards
  • Avoid last‑minute filings that increase risk
  • Allocate staff resources responsibly

5. Important USPS Changes and Mailing Expectations

The United States Postal Service has implemented changes that will affect delivery speed and reliability, including:

  • Longer delivery windows in many regions
  • Reduced processing frequency in some facilities
  • Increased risk of delays close to filing deadlines

What This Means for You

  • Mail is no longer considered time‑certain, even when sent early
  • Postmarks do not guarantee timely delivery to our office
  • Last‑minute mailing significantly increases the risk of missing deadlines

Our Recommendation

  • If mailing is required, send documents well in advance and use tracked services
  • Do not rely on mail for time‑sensitive or deadline‑driven submissions

6. How You Can Help Us Help You

To ensure the best outcome:

  • Submit documents early and all at once when possible
  • Communicate changes or missing items proactively
  • Ask questions as soon as they arise
